Getting errors like this. Newhosting thought it might be the compression stuff. He was using free Norton AV which came with his connection. He was skeptical that the virus scanner had anything to do with it. Mentioned he'd used it for years. The problem with that thought is that, every time it updates itself, it's really a new virus scanner with new behavior. He didn't like Norton, I suggested Microsoft Security Essentials. He removed norton, installed MSSE and his downloads went back to normal.

This kind of thing happens a couple times a week. Most of the time people are in denial but, those that listen and try something like this can typically fix their problems.

Avast

kaspersky

Norton

Will all block downloads unless you can tell them to leave Newsbin alone.

Quade, thanks so much, back in business. Took your advice, installed
MSE, dumped the others. So used to not trusting Microsoft...
thanks again, love what you do

Hi.

Problem solved.  Giganews came through.  It was a problem with the most recent Avast anti-virus program.  I added the Giganews server to the "ignored address" field on Avast's troubleshooting page, and all is now OK.

Thanks for you help and speedy reply

Couple today.
