Cant download small files...

Postby dalube » Tue Feb 09, 2010 12:57 am

Windows 7 64bit.
v5.55 B10 build 9724.

From giganews (dont know if this matters) when I try and download small files (this is the best I can describe it as because all the large files work) the process fails even when I attempt "add to download list -bypass filter".

Log file contents for one of the small files I have issues with that failed.

Cant recall if this worked for me in previous versions because I so seldom download small files.

Something is interfering with Newsbin's ability to rename the file. I would suspect the anti-virus software - which one are you using?

Good thought, I'm using Kaspersky. However this might not explain why all the large files I download work perfectly.

I'll try it with Kaspersky off...

Well it works with Kaspersky off!

This is not good. Only small files are impacted in this way by the interaction of Newsbin with Kaspersky...when you think you've seen everything.

Well I doubt I'll be getting any support from Kaspersky on this so perhaps there is something that can be done from the Newsbin side?

Nope, nothing I can do about it. V scanners tie into the operating system below the level that Newsbin can access.

I mean, you can make a virtual machine, run Newsbin in it with no scanner. You can buy a cheap laptop as a download machine and not run a V scanner on it. There's lots of things you can do but, it mostly means doing away with the V scanner. I don't use them.

Thanks for responding Quade, I understand your position on this and it makes sense.

I've found a workaround with Kaspersky. I've simply added NewsBin in a Kaspersky exclusion list as a "trusted application" with "do not monitor activity" parameter set.

This seems to be a good compromise for me in my situation, YMMV.

My disclaimer: I would not recommend this workaround course of action (for anyone experiencing the same problem I did) unless you KNOW what you doing.
Take Quade's great advice and set up a virtual machine or use something like sand boxie instead.

The other option would be to add the Newsbin Download folder to the exclusions list. It is recommended that this done with most anti-virus software to stop it interfering with Newsbin.

I like your idea Itimpi better than my workaround because this is more targeted (this exclusion is more specific and is only one folder location involved).

However, be careful NOT to use said download folder for any other operations as it is NOT being monitored.

Dunno if this is related, but for some reason I also can't read posts, the d/l is "stuck" in-process and the text window never opens (like it used to a few betas back.)

Yes, I have to concur with this.
Before I added my Newbin DL folder to the exception list, my downloads were ridiculously slow - as if I was downloading from Forte Agent(also to a virus-scanner excluded directory!). After excluding the Newsbin dir, my DLs were as fast as my connection- can't say that for Agent!.

You just have to be careful though. If you deal with virus-prone groups, make sure you transfer them to a non-excluded directory before you deal with them.
