Low Disk space millisecond popup

Postby coyote2 » Wed Nov 06, 2019 12:07 pm

I think it's Newsbin that's flashing a Low Disk space popup at me (it appears every couple seconds, only visible for a millisecond so I've been unable to printscreen it or even bloody read it). Even after the downloads complete and I restart Newsbin.

If I focus on one part of the screen for a couple appearances I can see it's referencing a C:/Users/ path (presumably Newsbin's data folder) and a F:/ path to my downloads folder. (But never an I:/ path to my unrar folder.)

But none of these (single-partition) HDDs are the least bit low on space.

Is this a bug in 6.82RC2b5132 ? Should I try falling back to RC1?

Or maybe I should run HDD diagnostics on my space-plentiful hard drives; aaargh, that takes many days.

The reason it works the way it works is I've found that windows will occasionally lie about available disk space. So, it pops up but keeps checking so if the next time it checks and everything is fine, it'll close the window. My windows never lied to be so, I'm not really sure why this happens.

I might look inside the NBI and make sure there's no mention of the D: drive.

Thank you very much for your reply, Quade! I'm not sure I get what you explained is happening. Why would it be checking (then closing when it finds everything is fine) every second? (I think the popup has an OK button but the popup closes so fast I'm not able to click it.)
2.
Oh, I did just manage to anticipate and Printscreen the popup since it was going up a consistent every-second:

OK, I ran HDD diagnostics and CHKDSK on both the indicated drives (C: and F:) and both were AOK.
4.
Full disclosure, there are two more HDDs in the computer and one is 95% full, but it's been connected and never used for years, so why would Newsbin start throwing up a Low Disk space about it popup now? That drive K: has never been used for Newsbin in any way.

Probably need to revert then. Another reports but in his case the popup stays popped up.

Maybe I should just get rid of the popup altogether. It'll log it in the status tab.

Thanks man! I think I will revert, the strobe effect is dizzying.
It makes me laugh that I'm the only one whose popup has this crazy behavior.
Oh, and it's on a ca. 2005 AMD CPU; when I get a chance I'll check to see if it happens on my ca. 2005 Intel CPU.

That's happening with me too so you're not alone which I mentioned in the other topic..

Doesn't seem to cause any probs just that alert pops up every time I first start Newsbin.

I mentioned that it was two people do far. You are the two.

I'm completely removing the popup on the next RC. When it stops downloading, you'll have to look at the logging tab to see why.

Thanks Quade! FYI my filesets don't 'stop downloading', everything completes AOK!

I just tested this on my other PC with a ca. 2004 CPU, and it has the exact same symptoms (which feel like a strobe-light) of this issue. So count me as two instances of this, on 32-bit Windows versions of both Win7 Pro (Intel CPU) and Win8.1 Pro (AMD CPU). If CPU details are desired I'll be happy to provide them.

Yeah, it's odd. Just two reports so far. I'm sure it's happening. Just not sure why.

Quade,

Just to throw an idea into the pot that might or might not help, I program using Delphi and I make use of the Borland Database Engine. There's a famous bug in that backbone where the amount of free space is read in on startup, and if that free space is CLOSE or right on, a multiple of 4G, then the request for free space at the program startup comes back as the inverse of what it is (i.e. NEGATIVE). Then later, during execution, if the program does something that BDE thinks is space consuming, it compares the probable size of the ask against the KNOWN free space and says, you can't fit POSITIVE whatever into NEGATIVE 4G times whatever. The only solution is to copy the data folder to a folder we call XSpaceConsumedDeleteIfNecessary. And whether adding to it or deleting it, we come up with some non 4G multiple. AND we have to exit and restart the app because BDE does the calculation at startup and KEEPS that number throughout the running of the program. A programmer from Brazil found a fix, but I found it hit or miss.

Now, I KNOW you aren't running BDE. But the mechanism that is in the now deprecated database backbone is PROBABLY similar to what you are encountering. Whether that is in any way helpful, I can't know. But I thought I'd mention it.

Dex and I are wondering if this is a 32 bit issue to be honest. Newsbin uses 64 bit numbers for all disk related sizes. I've run 32 bits here on my 64 bit system and it doesn't do this.

Pretty sure I have a fix for this. It'll be in the next RC. Someone reported an MP3 issue I could reproduce so once that's fixed, it'll be out.
