Version 6 Beta 13 Available...

Postby dexter » Mon May 09, 2011 2:02 pm

Quade made an important discovery in the SSL code and B13 includes changes that should make SSL support more reliable. This version also has a new layout for Post lists and we are looking for feedback about it.

Summary:

  • Code changes to improve reliability of SSL connections
  • New filter toolbar on Post list and Image Database tab (Search tab next)
  • Turned SSL compression on for Internet Search data.
  • Many bug fixes as reported in the release notes

More details about these and other changes are on the Newsbin Beta Page, along with the download link.

Please report any issues as a reply to this thread or a new post in this forum. You can also contact us directly through our Technical Support Form or swing by our irc channel. It's #newsbin on irc.newsbin.com.

I started clicking madly for a couple of minutes with nothing happening; I then realized I had to click on the Quake(?)-symbol to enable the filters:-)
After this, they work fine, and I like the new space-efficient layout.
Of course, now there is plenty of room for a second set of filters below the current one! (hint, hint, nudge, nudge:-))
I would simple _love_ to be able to AND and NOT two filters...

Just noticed that there is no pop-up hint for the radioactive button that seems to clear the search field on the new post list.
Nor for the right-arrow (that I can't tell what it does) between the "Reload Group data" and "Display Settings" widgets.

I've got a strange problem with a fresh installation of beta 13: it doesn't remember the column settings for any group tab, while it does remember those settings for the Groups and Download tabs. Does anyone else see this or know where this is/should be stored?

It's automatically stored, so set-and-forget. If you're having it constantly forget, or any other bizarre GUI behaviour, it's best to reinstall and accept that last option to reset the GUI. This last release, I had to do that, things were off, that fixed it.

The problem is that this was a clean install, i.e. all files and registry settings from 5.59 were removed prior to installing beta 13.

After some experimenting, the column settings seem to be stored in subkeys under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\DJI Interprises\Newsbin50\WorkSpace, with PostList as the one for group tabs. After deleting the Workspace subkey and thus all its subkeys, the PostList subkey isn't recreated unlike the other subkeys (ConnectionList, DownloadList, etc.). It may be that *upgrading* from a previous beta to beta 13 hides this problem, but I get the feeling there may be a problem starting with beta 13 with regard to the registry storage for the PostList columns?

Hmm, I believe all the functionality in that key got moved to a workspace.xml file, actually. I did a clean install not all that long ago on linux and it seems to have no trouble remembering settings. Anyway, probably something Quade/Dexter should take a peek at, maybe it's a new problem.

The columns are stored in the registry. The layout and shortcuts are in the XML file.

I am showing the same symptons in beta 13 of not remembering column settings. I did reset GUI on installing and then tried reinstalling and resetting the GUI with the same results.

It's exactly the same for me with my installation Beta 13 under Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Neither of the suggested remedies has resolved the problem.

One slightly unusual aspect of my installation is that the data folder is located on a different hard drive (DataPath=E:\NewsBin Data\) than the installation folder (C:\Program Files\Newsbin).

When I performed the uninstallation of the Beta 12, I elected not to delete the files in E:\NewsBin Data\, but made sure to delete the C:\Users\KingFish\AppData\Local\Newsbin folder before performing the reinstallation.

I've also noticed a minor cosmetic issue with the "Register Newsbin" display window. I can see only the uppermost portion(s) of the word(s) located directly under the word Registration beside the input box for the Registration Code.

I've retested by first installing beta 12 (column settings are correctly stored), beta 13 (not correctly stored) and finally beta 12 again (correctly stored again). In all three cases I had the installer reset the GUI.

Based on this, the problem is definitely in beta 13.

Glad to hear. Would it be possible to release a fixed beta soon, as beta 13 is very hard to use as is? (Having to adjust the columns 10 times during every session gets old real fast...)

I have to fix the search tab before I can put a new on up. I might get Dex to put B12 back up again.

B12 is still on the site. You can go back if this issue is really bugging you.

Maybe this comes with age, but i am slowly getting lost in the icons the new interface brought. Would it be possible (sometime in future) to make them replaceable with normal text buttons? Just ramblings of 50 years old with near 20/100 "eyesight" but please, consider such option :(

This group, that is how it looked in b12. In b13 i found bullet icons instead of the buttons and i was totally lost ~30cm from my screen (badly shortsighted)

New filter toolbar is horrible. Can we have the option of keeping the previous one? On the servers tab the "downloaded" counter does not work.

Well, feedback was asked for, and you gave it. I can almost promise it won't turn into an option, it will either fly or die. The thinking behind it was to be more consistent, basically the posts pane now has the same widgets as the download tab, so it would be more useful if you offered up a little more constructive criticism, unless of course what you're really saying is 'I like the old one' and that's that, which is fine.

Overall, most users appear to be taking it in stride, there hasn't been a lot of bitching about it. I prefer it for the consistency, plus it takes up less room than it's predecessor. I find it's a little more obscure, though, and wouldn't mind seeing a little thought put into breaking up the sections visually, but that's a minor moan, I've been using it constantly and I'm not hunting any more.

I've noted is. Some of the older users are having a hard time with it so, I'm considering alternate toolbars.

What don't you like about it? It took me some getting used to too but, I prefer it now.

After using the new search toolbar for a while, these are my views:

* Hard to tell what the icons are, but to me, that doesn't matter, _as long as_ there are clear pop-up description on hover on _all_ of them (currently missing for Atomic Waste/Clear Search and Right Arrow/Load newer files into the list(?))
(Maybe it's even possible to make these tool tips bigger and easier to read?)
After all, the icons won't move that often, so you should learn what they do pretty quickly.
* Not too keen on the combined Display Settings widget. Would prefer separate tick boxes. Contrieved icons instead of long text are fine, as long as there are clear pop-ups:-)
Ideally, I'd like three: Hide Old, Hide Downloaded and Show Filenames.
btw, I find myself not using "Show Filenames" (despite wanting to!) 'cause it's too bothersome to change it. A possibility to bind "Toggle Show Filenames" to a keyboard combo would be very nice.
* Would prefer dividers between the filter widgets. Yes, I should probably know that the drop-down goes to the right of the entry box, but currently, it's hard to visually tell what belongs where.
* Behaviour with filters disabled a bit confusing. I think the Filter Profile entry used to say something like "Filters Disabled" (greyed out) until you enabled filters; now it's less obvious why clicking doesn't do anything unless you enable filters, first.

* Would, of course, _love_ a second set of filter widgets (below the current one) and a AND/NOT selector:-)

Well, I dislike having to hover over something to know what it is and also without the tick boxes, you can't tell if something has been activated or not. I did not think that space was of that much concern since the group posts widget is likely to be the largest in most setups. However, I realize that other users are not going to have there arrangement like mine.

When the MemCacheLimit first came out, I set my setting to 1000 since I have 4 gigs of memory (about 3 gigs free) with a high end quad core processor. I noticed today that it's writting each file of the rar set to disk and not storing them in memory prior to decode. I checked my nbi and the setting is still there. Are there any reported issues with MemCacheLimit? If not, any suggestions?

You don't really want to set it to 1000 with only 4 gigs of RAM. It's "per file" so, 100-120 is probably a better number. As for writing the NB2, I'll check it out.
